If The Walls Could Talk

My family has been busy. My mom and dad decided to move from the home we grew up in. They had 30 days to move out 46 years of “stuff”. They had the house built 46 years ago. My youngest brother was just a baby when we moved in.

With them being in their 80’s they have found it uncomfortable and sometimes a struggle to go up and down the stairs so they purchased a one level house they liked just a few miles away. They are actually closer to me now and I like that idea.

It was bitter sweet seeing them let go of my old home place. There were lots of stress and mixed emotions during the process. Due to work, I was unable to visit the old house one last time before closing. I was hoping to see it empty but maybe it’s best to remember it full of memories.

If the walls could talk it would have many more stories than I could tell...

It once housed 4 kids, 1 grandchild and several foster siblings.
It was a place where we brought our first dates and where we cried over our first breakups.
There were fights over the telephone and laughs over dinner.
It seen a lot of spankings and groundings along with lots of love and hugs.
This is were we learned to ride a bike and parked our first car.
Our handprints are in the cement around the well.
We had tree swings, bonfires, and Tree houses that over looked a yard where many loved pets were buried and lots of bare feet run.
Where we would spend hours running through the sprinklers on a hot summer day and sit by the fire place eating tv dinners and jiffy pop on a cold Winter evening.

The house was just too big for my parents and they really needed to downsize. Now it is time for mom and dad to settle down in their new home and we already can’t wait to start new traditions and make new memories. After all, It’s the family that makes a home, not the house.

Repurposed Home Keys

Do you have a drawer of keys? Or do you have key rings laying around full of keys that no longer belong anywhere? Well, I do.

Why is it that we keep keys? When we move away or our locks are changed, people tend to keep the keys. I even have old car keys from when I was a teenager. They are no longer any good.
Or are they?

Nick and I got a little crafty last week when my daughter said she was looking for a small key hanger for her new little 400 sq ft studio apartment. She loves to throw her keys up on a hook when she comes in. She has always shared an apartment with her Kappa Delta sister but has now decided to try things on her own. Her apartment is adorable and we can’t wait to see how she decorates it.

We looked around for some ideas to make her a key hanger. Hooks can be expensive, so we found a cool way to make some hooks using old keys. Nick carefully bent the keys into hooks. With a little cutting, sanding and painting, we created her the perfect key hanger. This key hanger will also have some sentimental value as each key is from a family home.

There is a key from both her grandparents homes.
One key is from the first house she grew up in and our first home.
And one key is from our current home she continued to grow up in until she moved out on her own.
The wooden part of the key hanger is a piece of the molding from our house.

Nick did the sanding and I did the painting and writing.
We decided to give it a distressed look by sanding down and scuffing some areas.

We had fun making this together and all it costed us was a dollar paint brush and a Sharpie.
Now let’s hope the area where she wants to put it will be big enough in that tiny little uptown apartment.

Do you have old keys laying around? I think one of these days people will no longer need keys as everything is touch or speech activated.
Even cars nowadays are cranking up by themselves.

Oui Pot Crochet Hangers

Often you will find me sitting in the center of the living room organizing my yarn basket. While most crochet addicts have a whole closet of yarn, I just have a little square storage cube type basket. It works perfect to hold the yarns I need and fits perfectly beside me chair.

I do not stock up on yarn. I buy as I go. It gives me an excuse to visit Hobby Lobby. Most of you can relate. However, I do wind up with a lot of smalls balls of yarn that are not big enough to make a full project. I will normally roll into what I call my scrap ball and will eventually use it to make a crazy multi colored scrap blanket.

I keep my acrylic yarn and cotton yarn separated. Cotton is my favorite fiber to crochet with. I like to keep scraps of cotton yarn to make small things like baby teethers, face wipes or coasters but I found something new to make with my scrap pieces.

Oui Pot Crochet Hangers

I am obsessed in these cute little crochet hangers. I'm thinking of adding some to my Etsy shop. They are just so darn cute. Can you imagine some cute little succulents in them? Oh my!

I have several Oui yogurt glass jars. Oui is a French yogurt by Yoplait and is delicious. You can find them at most grocery stores in the yogurt section and are usually only a dollar each and have several flavors to choose from. I always keep a few of these empty glass pots in the cabinet because they make great candle holders, and plant starters. You can actually purchase special lids from the Oui website if you want to use them to store things. They also have some other crafty ideas you can use these little pots for.

These crochet hangers are quick and easy. The original pattern can be found HERE.

Welcome Frosty-Candle Review

The weather finally dropped last week and we had a day of snow. However, it's been in the 60’s again this week. That did not stop me from welcoming Frosty with my new candle from Goose Creek Candles.

Welcome Frosty quickly filled my home with a fresh Winter scent. The mix of vanilla, butter cream, fresh peach, sandalwood, and coconut with a hint of spice quickly filled the room with the aroma of fresh snow. Even my husband likes this candle and he is picky about fragrances I use in our home.

I am overwhelmed with how well these candles smell. The duel cotton wicks burn even so there are not holes or low spots in my candle. I can also breath a breath of fresh air knowing these candles burn clean without any chemicals getting into the air or on materials in my home. This also means I do not have to worry about my candle glass turning black. No one wants a dirty candle.

After realizing how great the candles are, I decided to purchase a couple of the Goose Creek wax melts from the their wax melt collection. I use wax melts at work to keep my office fresh. I will usually get them from a local store and I thought those were fine, until I tried the ones from Goose Creek.

I chose “Cucumber Rain” and “Blooming Magnolia”. These are absolutely the best and I will never go back to any other brand. I get a lot of compliments on how great my office smells now and everyone that comes in, wants to stay and sit a while.

I will be getting more of these wax melts soon. The hardest part is trying to decide on a new aroma as they offer over 120 different fragrances. They also have rooms sprays, car scents, and tea lights along with other great products.

So if you want a fragrance in the air true to smell, visit Goose Creek Candles. They are made right here in the USA. With great prices and fast delivery, you can't go wrong.

DIY Rain Chain

I don’t know about you but I am ready for Spring to show up! We have warm days, then we have days that feel like the middle of January. Mother nature can’t seem to make up her mind. But, then again, it’s not unusual that we completely skip Spring and jump right into Summer. It’s crazy.

Do you like the rain? I love those short rain showers in the Summer time that bring thunderstorms along with it. You know, the short lasting ones that once they water the gardens, the sun comes back out.

Speaking of rain. I have been wanting  a “rain chain”.
What is a rain chain you ask?
Rain chains are a creative, beautiful and functional alternative to gutter downspouts. It guides the rain water visibly down chains from the roof to the ground. It can change the look of a plain down spout into a whimsical piece of art.

Since I do not plan to actually use a rain chain for a down spout, I chose to add one on a shepherds hook near my patio for fun.
I knew I did not want to actually buy one as they are expensive and looked too easy to make myself. The options to making these were unending. You can just use a chain alone and it will be pretty or you can add extra charm to make it one of a kind.

I wanted to make mine using vintage tarte tins.

First, I priced out some chain. It was outragious for a 6ft piece. So what did I do? I went to the craft store and purchased some split rings (key chains). You have to do the math on how many it will take depending on how long you want it. I needed about 6ft. I used 34-1 1/2 inch rings and spaced them with 24-1 inch rings.

Then the search was on for some old tarte tins. I caved and bought some from a seller at Tin Roof Porch on Etsy. The lot of tins were more than I actually needed but his prices were great. You should definitely go check out the other vintage items he has for sale. I only needed a few to use on my rain chain. I plan to clean up the other ones and keep them. I’m a sucker for old kitchen and bakeware.

I cringed as my husband drilled tiny holes in the bottoms of these tiny tins for the chain. They were just so darn cute! I can’t believe I actually ruined them to hange outside.

I had no idea how I was going to get the tins on the chain. I ran to my art closet and pulled out some beads and wire. I played around until I found a solution. The cups were a bit wobbly on the wire, so I dabbed some hot glue on the top beads to hold them straight. I really did not want to do that.

Now my rain chain is ready. I love how it turned out. This will make watching rain even more fun.
I can see the chain from my kitchen window.

Once I decided on a spot to put it, I anchored it down into a small rock pile. It’s also in a spot where my husband will not have to worry about cutting around it, so that made him happy. I’m sure I will be adding some additional looks around the bottom of the chain. Maybe a pot of flowers or a fairy garden.

Note: It cost me less than 20.00 to make this one. How cool is that?

Loui

Meet Loui.

Loui lives in my window shutters. Every year he comes out of hiding and spends the summers working for me.
He is my bug catcher.

I had a little scare this Winter. I saw a cold stiff lizard in my carport. It was around the same time I read about lizards dropping from trees in the cooler temperatures as if they were dead, but not really. I even read on The ShipsLog (I think) where he warmed a lizard up and got it mobile again. Maybe he can confirm that in his comment.

So what did I do? Promise not to laugh?
Well, I actually warmed an old wash cloth in the dryer, went outside and picked up the stiff lizard, wrapped in the warm rag and put him in a safe place under the carport. I was hoping it would come back alive.

It never did. After a week, I placed him in a little sandwich bag and threw him in the trash just in time for the trash man to dump him in the big truck and off they went. I was sad. I thought it was Loui.

I got a text the other day. Nick said “Loui is back!”. I was so excited.

I’m still not sure if the dead one was the original Loui or his brother but they all are named Loui so I guess it don’t matter.

When I come home from work, I walk up to the window and say “Loui Loui” and the little guy will actually leave his work station and walk down close to meet me as he lets out a big yawn. He is not shy.

I’m sure the neighbors think I'm a crazy woman. From their view, it looks like I’m standing there talking to the bricks. So, I now go inside and open the window and we talk through the screen.

Easter Run Down

Saturday my daughter came home to spend Easter. We spent the morning doing a little shopping until the crowds started getting on our nerves and we ended up coming back home. Nick took us up town for some ice cream and coffee. Yep. I had ice cream and she had both. Seriously, even the jingling ice cream trucks around here sell ice cream and coffee. I find it weird, but whatever.

After ice cream we met up with a neighbor and purchased some fresh eggs from her lovely hens. I just love how they look in this vintage basket that mom gave me last week. Just look how colorful they are by nature.

Me and my daughter dyed eggs later. I boiled some regular store bought ones and some of the fresh ones. I decorated a few of the fresh ones and she dyed the white ones using the dyed rice method. Its so easy. You just drop some food coloring in a small bag of rice and shake the egg around to create a unique look.

While I made a cake with the some of the fresh eggs and will eat some of the eggs for breakfasts. While I made a cake, my daughter made some marshmallow Easter fluff. The recipe can be found HERE.

Sunday morning it was rise and shine at 6 am to make it to church in time for sunrise service on the church lawn. This is one of our favorite things to do on Easter. After the service we all headed into the fellowship hall for a hot breakfast that included biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon and grits. My oh my was it good! My mom and dad made the breakfast so that made it even more better. I love my moms gravy. She makes it dark and so thick that a spoon will stand in it.
When we came home from church, My daughter had an Easter basket waiting for her. Did I mention shes 26? I mean, your never to old for an Easter basket are you? She also surprised us with our own basket full of goodies.

After a short rest, we put on our Easter outfits and headed out to regular church services .

We did not do our usual Easter dinner with Nicks side of the family. Instead, we headed to my moms house where my Sister in law created a large delicious meal. It was a change from the normal but it was great to spend time with family.

Now it’s late and I'm typing this blog with one eye open as I’m about to fall asleep. (or coming off a sugar high). So excuse the rambling.
It’s back to work tomorrow and the morning will come quick.

Happy Easter!

Bath Vapor Balls

I’m one of those moms that can come up with a solution in a tight situation. My daughter calls me “resourceful”. Find me some twigs, and I’ll make a rope. I will make a heating pad out of a sock and rice. You get the idea. I can just figure ways to make things work with whatever I have at hand. So, when I found a recipe for vapor bath balls, I could not figure out why, in my whole mommy life, have I never thought of this! During cold season, I’ve used menthol on Kleenexes, and made cotton ball sniffers, but this? I should have thought of this years ago.

I have been lucky to escape the cold and flu in over a year but I know a lot of you have been down with the crud. Or maybe you just need a fresh eye opening shower. Like when you bite into a York peppermint patty, you get that sinsat.......Never mind.

I’m going to share with you this easy 3 ingredient recipe to make medical history..... Not really, but you will love these if you ever get a stopped up nose or develop a head or chest cold. They are safe for kids, however, I would limit the exposure just in case. They also will not harm your tub, shower or drains. So before you head out to the drug store, grab a bowl, Vick's VapoRub and some cornstarch. I’m gonna share with you this easy and fun way to make a feel good aroma.

 Bath Vapor Balls

1 cup - corn starch
3 tablespoons- Vick's VapoRub (or other mentol gel)
3 tablespoons water
2 drops Food Coloring (optional)

  • In a glass bowl and a fork, toss and mix VapoRub and cornstarch until it starts looking pebbleish. (Is that a word?)

  • Drop in tablespoons of water one at a time while mixing. (You can add food coloring at this time but its optional.)
  • If you pinch the mixture, you will now see how it sticks. (It will still just look "pebbleish").
  • Now use your hands and form balls as big or little as you like. (I was able to make four palm size or 3 inch balls.)
USE:  Place a ball in the floor of your shower or tub. As the ball melts, it will release a menthol vapor to help open up those sinuses.
I have a bowl of these sitting in my room and my room smells like menthol. They are that strong!
STORE: You can place them in a plastic bag or container for keeps.

ENJOY!!!

NOTE: I am not a doctor and this is simply a home remidy to feeling better during a cold. Please consult a doctor if you are not feeling well.

Floral Beauty from Silk Plants Direct

Flowers are great to send and receive for any occasion. It's not too early to even think about Mothers Day. It will be here before you know it. This is a good time to start thinking about what to get Mom to brighten up her day. If it’s flowers she likes, skip the real ones and get her something that will last longer than a week. Not sure where to find high quality real looking flowers? Look no further than Silk Plants Direct. They offer a huge selection of realist silk flowers, so whatever flower is her favorite, you will be sure to find it. You can choose from single stem flowers to beautiful arrangements.

They have over 500 varieties of silk plants, trees, flowers, and more. You may see their products in places like hospitals, hotels, shopping centers, restaurants and other spaces as they offer commercial options too.

This product was provided free of charge in exchange for my honest review.
All opinions are my own.
Color shades in photos may vary due to change of lighting.

When Silk Plants Direct asked me to choose one of their floral products, I was overwhelmed with the different flowers and plants to choose from. It was so hard to decide on which one I wanted to try. This was a challenge for me because I'm such an indecisive person and all of their selections were so pretty. As I did a face plant in the palm of my hand, I decided to go straight to my favorite flower. I chose the yellow Tulips in a glass container.

It just screamed Spring to me. I thought about how pretty these will look during the Spring and Summer months. I also though about how great these will look on my table at Easter.

The shipping was quick. When my package arrived I was so excited and immediately tore open the box. I’m glad they were wrapped and packed with protection because I dropped the box while opening it. “Whooo” no harm done. They were perfect. I gently unwrapped the packaging and lifted the flowers from the box. I spent the rest of the day placing the arrangement of Tulips all over the house. I wanted to find the perfect spot to show them off.

These Tulips look soft and delicate and even feel real.

They were perfect from the petals to the cute moss that blanketed the bulb. If you look closely you will see these Tulips are sitting in an illusion of water. This means I will never have to water them. Yes, that's my kind of flowers.

With the affordable prices and quality products, I plan to shop at Silk Plants Direct for any future plants. I’ve already got some ideas in my head for my future beach house. Did I mention, they have Palm Trees too?

Crochet Fairy Pumpkins

My plan this season, is to decorate using only things I made added to some old stuff I already had. Blaah! I may toss the old stuff to the road after this year. I hate the smell of old fake floral when it ages. Being in the attic all summer, this is exactly what happens. Now, I know why people burn lots of fragrant candles during the holidays. Ya think?

I have a slew of remnant pieces of yarn left over from other projects. The pieces are too small to make anything useful so I decided to make some tiny pumpkins to use in my Fall decorations. Cute huh?

They call these fairy pumpkins because of the size and the wonky little stems. Sort of  like the ones you see in fairytales.

I was inspired by THIS PATTERN found at "A Time for all seasons" blog.
I adusted the rounds a bit to create different sizes and used my own imagination on the stems.

They were so fun and quick to make that I had to stop myself before they ended up all over the house.

Meanwhile, I have had some request from family and friends asking me to make them a couple of these cuties, so back to my yarn stash for more pumpkin making. This will be fun to do while I enjoy some Hallmark movies in my recliner.

Rustic Bundt Pan Wreath

It's September. I hate to see Summer go but I do like the smell of Autumn. I enjoy the colors its brings. I like flannel and fire pits. It's that time for falling leaves, football games, bonfires and Pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING hits the selves. I have a confession: Pumpkin flavor is not my favorite. Pumpkin Pie is ok if its loaded with whip topping.

I'm ready to bring out my Fall decorations but we don't want to rush it. We want to get one more beach trip in first, so I'll wait until its officially Fall.

Meanwhile I had this bright idea to make a fall wreath. We do not have much money so I'm always thrifty. When I say thrifty, im talking thrift store or dollar store thrifty. Today we made a trip to the dollar store for some cookies. They have a kind I like and they are only a dollar!

I never go to the dollar store without leaving with a handfull of "things".
Today I grabbed a spool of seasonal ribbon and a floral stem.
My husband just gave me a look. "I have a plan", I exclaimed. He just nodded and said "well, ok".

Once we got home, I had an hour to waste before meeting my brother-in-laws for dinner. My husband was resting on the sofa. I quietly pulled out my old rustic and stained bundt pan from the cabanet while my craft idea was still fresh in my head. I cut the ribbon and twisted the floral stem until the idea became reality.

I created a fall wreath to hang in my kitchen. It took me all of two dollars and two minutes to create.
The bundt cakes will have to wait till Winter.

Stuck in the 70's

Ah the 70's. I was one year old in 1970. I'm still living in it. Yep, I live in a 70''s style ranch house. The era of tall dark cabinets and Formica counter tops. The years of the pink and yellow bathrooms with 2 inch tiles covering the walls, ceramic tubs and don't forget that paneling.

When we moved in, we installed hardwood floors throughout, took out the book selves in the den, tore out most of the paneling throughout, carpeted the bedrooms, installed new kitchen appliances, fixtures  and painted the walls.

But its still that mid modern 70's!
Its the kitchen!!!

We do not want to spend any money remodeling. We simply do not have it. We make do with what we have.

I plan to lighten it up soon with new curtains and brighter accent rugs. If the cabinets get a face lift, that will be up to the husband. I cant do it myself and will not even attempt it without his support. We never do large purchases or changes without the others approval. We stay in the same boat.

Then I sit back and look around. I begin to think. This was at one time, some woman's dream kitchen.

It was the "better homes" style at the time.
I picture a mother with bouffant hair in an apron hosting a kids birthday party.
I picture a dad with sideburns coming in from work while a roast is waiting in the oven.
I picture Tupperware parties
and macrame plant hangers.

I sometimes think I'd like to keep hold of the 70's style, I mean since I can't have the french country look I adore, I'll just revamp the 70's style! Brighten it up but keep the look. Maybe add some retro fixtures and decor, and just go with it. Let it be the look I'm going for in case anyone ask......
Wait, husband just shook his head "no".
[sigh]
Ok I do have a plan B.

For the record: No my bathroom is not pink. But we do have a yellow one with a golden throne!

Recipes Oldies But Goodies

My Daughter called up the other night wanting to know if I had a recipe for macaroni and cheese. I usually make mine in a crock pot (recipe here) but she wanted the one that bakes in the oven. This made my Husband and I run to the recipe box. The recipe box full of oldie but goodie recipes. These recipes were given down from as far as Grandmothers.

A few years ago I inherited some of my mother-in-laws recipes. She was a wonderful cook and a lot of her recipes were handed down from her older family and friends. Some of the recipes require items that you cant even find anymore. I have noticed that in a lot of old recipes, the amounts differ from today. I am sure she had a lot of recipes in her head that she didn't have to write down. That's how my Mom does a lot of her cooking as well.

We spent about an hour looking through them and laughing and remembering how our Moms would make things we liked or didn't like.

By the way, we found my Daughter a simple macaroni and cheese recipe. It was in one of the good ole old church recipe books made up of several recipes from ladies of the church.

While thumbing through some of those recipes, my husband pulled out an old recipe. One that was small and easy but yet made me think of how simple life was when we were small. How our Mothers would always have a remedy to make us feel better.

She didn't have to run out to the store, she could just make it herself.  Where do you find Paragoric? And did I just see 2 oz. of Whisky?  Every 30 minutes?
I think I feel a cough coming on.

Textured Dish Cloths

I love to crochet. At the end of the day, when work is over, dinner is ate, our walk is walked and the dishes are done, I will curl up in my chair and crochet while I watch TV. This usually does not happen until after nine. Then we go to bed around 11:30. I find It relaxing and it helps with my nervous hands. Yes, since my daughter has left the nest, I stay worried and nervous. Its better sometimes than others but I'm learning to deal with it. They say you will worry about your kids until they are 90. I believe it.

Speaking of dishes, I have gotten on a little kick of making dish clothes. Made with 100% cotton, these little scrubbers are perfect for all kinds of clean ups. They have just enough texture to clean up any mess.

I'm not sure what the stitch pattern is called but its my favorite. I also make coffee cozies using the same stitch. I think everyone should be able to enjoy these so if you know how to crochet, you can use my pattern. If you do not know how to crochet and would love to have a some of these, you can purchase them from my Etsy shop. I can make them in almost any color you wish.

I tweak it just a bit to make dish cloths in a way that I do not need to add a trim stitch around at the end. The way I do the last stitch makes a nice clean edge with a simple scallop.

So grab your needle and lets get started.
This is a simple pattern that consist of single crochet and double crochet.
Perfect for beginners.

I used:
Size I crochet hook.
Peaches & Cream cotton yarn (I found some at WalMart and Hobby Lobby.

Instructions:
chain 30
Row 1: sc,dc in 2nd stitch from hook, skip next chain, *sc,dc in next chain, skip next chain* across.
sc in the last stitch (of each row) ch1 turn.

Row 2: dc in same space as sc (from the end of row one), skip next space, *sc, dc in next , skip next * across. sc in the last stitch (of each row) ch1 turn.
Repeat Row 2 until you have a square.
Finish off and weave ends.

You can add a single crochet around the entire dish cloth before you finish off if you wish, but not necessary.

House Updo & DIY Summer Wreath

We moved into the home we are in now about eight years ago. It was a forclosed home in a neighborhood we liked and was familar with. If any of you have ever bought a forclosed home, you know what a project it can be. We spent many hours redoing the inside. We practacly had to redo it all from the wiring to the hardwood floors. We got it looking really nice even though to this day, there are a lot of unfinished work to be done. We just absolutly got worn out by it and decided we'd finish the little things as time goes by. We just didnt say how much time.

We decided to do some work to the outside and paint the doors and the carport. Just kinda give the house an updo, a change.

We had to fight the rain for three weeks. Yes, it rained in our town for three weeks. We jumped outside to paint at any little show of sunshine. Sometimes it was only for an hour or so.

My husband did 98% of the work. He sanded, painted, filled holes, rewired new doorbells and lights and even new handles on the old storm doors. He also added his special artistic talent to the front door way.  I got to paint some of the trim and a door. Im pretty excited about how it turned out. We still have to get used the front door. It didnt turn out the color we really expected, but I think I like it. Its growing on me.

What do you think?
Here are some before and after photos

After all the work was done, I decided I wanted a new wreath for my front door so I took off to the nearest Hobby Lobby. This Wreath caught my eye. I like daisies and I wanted something with some white and yellow....

Perfect!
But the only problem was , It cost $79.00. For some of you, that's not a lot, but for me, I was shocked! So I looked around and found all the things to make my own just like it....

Well, Almost just like it. Close enough..And it only costed me $30.00 and 15 minutes.

Next: Maybe I can put some of my craftiness to work and make some much needed window treatments. or maybe up date the kitchen? Ok, I'm pushing it now.
